The AI era has created a strange paradox. The same tools that let you build faster are quietly eroding the skills that make you valuable. And the developers who've figured this out aren't racing to code faster—they're doubling down on fundamentals.
From Craftsman to Commander
As developer and engineer Sho Arai puts it in his reflection on surviving the AI era: "The job of engineers in the AI era is not creation but auditing."
This isn't nostalgia talking. Arai, who's lived through the transition from mimeograph machines to LLMs, sees a fundamental shift in how engineering value is created. Developer Ernesto Castillo captures the existential tension in his essay "I miss thinking hard." He describes two core traits: the Builder (motivated by velocity and shipping) and the Thinker (needing deep, prolonged mental struggle).
AI perfectly satisfies the Builder. "I am currently writing much more, and more complicated software than ever," Castillo writes. But then comes the gut punch: "yet I feel I am not growing as an engineer at all."
The problem? "'Vibe coding' satisfies the Builder. It feels great to pass from idea to reality in a fraction of the time. But it has drastically cut the times I need to come up with creative solutions for technical problems."
He's identified something crucial: AI gives you a 70% solution quickly, and pragmatism says take it. But that 70% threshold means you never build the muscle memory for the hard 30%.
What This Means for Your Career
The good news: experienced developers aren't becoming obsolete. They're becoming more valuable—but only if they lean into the right skills.
Stop optimizing for speed. Everyone has access to the same AI tools. Speed is no longer a differentiator.
Invest in fundamentals. Arai's point about low-level knowledge isn't about writing assembly code. It's about having enough understanding to "instantly detect discomfort" when looking at AI-generated implementations. Can you spot the memory leak? The N+1 query? The race condition? That "aesthetic eye," as he calls it, is the value.
Build architectural thinking. When Reyes talks about "hundreds of different validation signals," he's describing systems thinking. Understanding how pieces fit together, what can break, where the bottlenecks are. AI can write functions; it struggles with coherent system design.
Develop domain expertise. The more context you have about the actual problem being solved—not just the code—the better you can evaluate whether an AI solution is good enough or dangerously wrong.

Arai offers this reminder: "That code of yours—do you truly understand its contents before deploying it?"

The hard problem isn't writing the function anymore. It's architecting systems that 100 AI agents can work on without creating chaos. These are still Thinker problems. They still require deep knowledge. They still separate junior from senior engineers.
